During root canal treatment in our clinic, we use specialist equipment and high-quality materials, including, among others, an apex locator for measuring canal length, a microscope for ultra-precise canal preparation, and gutta-percha for warm canal filling. To verify the effects of the procedure after its completion, the dentist checks the canal fillings using a point X-ray examination. At Focus Clinic, root canal treatment is performed only by experienced doctors who continuously expand their knowledge through courses and training in Poland and abroad. Learn more before your visit to an endodontist

Endodontics is a field of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the dental pulp and periapical tissues. The most important procedure in endodontics is endodontic treatment, also known as root canal treatment.

What does root canal treatment involve?

Root canal treatment involves removing the pulp from the tooth canals, disinfecting them, and then tightly filling the canals with appropriate materials. Finally, it is necessary to protect the clinical crown of the tooth. A commonly used procedure in endodontics is also root canal treatment under a microscope, performed using modern equipment. It greatly facilitates the dentist’s work, increases treatment precision, and helps shorten treatment time.

Endodontic treatment — what are the indications?

Root canal treatment is often the only alternative to extraction, meaning tooth removal. At Focus Clinic, we also offer replacement of missing teeth. Root canal treatment is recommended for patients with:

    • extensive carious lesions,
    • inflammation of the dental pulp,
    • pulp necrosis,
    • gangrene,
    • inflammation of periapical tissues,
    • tooth fracture or luxation,
    • incorrectly performed root canal treatment — in such cases, we perform repeat root canal treatment.

Root canal treatment under a microscope — is it worth it?

For procedures requiring exceptional precision, a dental microscope is used. Root canal treatment under a microscope is recommended in order to:

    • locate the main and/or additional root canals of the tooth that an endodontist cannot see with the naked eye during traditional root canal treatment,
    • remove broken instruments from root canals,
    • open obliterated root canals,
    • perform repeat root canal treatment — re-endo is a procedure that saves a tooth incorrectly treated in the past.

Stages of root canal treatment — what does the procedure look like?

Before the procedure, the endodontist plans the course of root canal treatment. The procedure aimed at preserving the tooth and avoiding extraction includes the following steps:

    Diagnostics

Before root canal treatment, the necessary diagnostics are performed to allow the endodontist to assess the condition of the tooth. At Focus Clinic, panoramic and tomographic examinations are performed using the state-of-the-art MyRay Hyperion X9 Pro tomograph.

    Opening the tooth

The endodontist dentist locally anesthetizes the tooth and then opens its chamber with a drill.

    Removal of dental pulp

At the next stage of root canal treatment, dental pulp is removed from inside the tooth, whether still alive or necrotic.

    Canal preparation

An important step in root canal treatment is proper preparation of the tooth canal or canals. At this stage, they are widened, cleaned, and disinfected.

    Canal filling

The endodontist then dries the tooth canal or canals and fills them with special gutta-percha, a natural-origin substance.

    Follow-up X-ray

After filling the tooth canal, the endodontist takes another X-ray, which allows them to assess the tightness of the tooth.

    Tooth reconstruction

The final stage of root canal treatment involves reconstruction of the tooth crown to restore its natural appearance and functionality.

    Does root canal treatment hurt?

Many people wonder whether root canal treatment hurts — despite common opinions, the procedure is performed in conditions of maximum comfort for the patient. Thanks to modern anesthesia systems, root canal treatment is completely painless — the doctor performs it under local anesthesia. At Focus Clinic, we use three anesthesia systems: CALAJECT, QUICKSLEEPER, and PIEZOTOME® CUBE.

Root canal treatment price — what affects it?

The main factor affecting the price of root canal treatment is the number of tooth canals. The cost of the procedure also depends on the quality of the materials and instruments used. Root canal treatment under a microscope and repeat root canal treatment involve a higher cost.

How long does root canal treatment take?

For many years, root canal treatment was a time-consuming procedure that required the patient to attend several visits at the dental office. Today, in most cases, endodontic treatment can be completed during just one visit, lasting about 1–2 hours. Root canal treatment under a microscope helps shorten treatment time by making the dentist’s work easier and increasing precision.

Root canal treatment — what are the contraindications?

In some cases, root canal treatment is not possible. Contraindications to the procedure performed by an endodontist include extensive carious defects and destruction of the tooth walls and root. The procedure is also not performed in cases of high-risk diseases, including heart and kidney diseases.
