Dental surgery is a branch of dentistry specializing in surgical procedures within the oral cavity. The most common surgical procedure in modern dentistry is tooth extraction, meaning tooth removal. It is performed when the patient’s teeth cannot be effectively treated with conservative dentistry procedures.
What is tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction is a surgical procedure involving the removal of one or more teeth. It is performed in a dental office. Tooth extraction is carried out by a dental surgeon. It is used as a last-resort solution — recommended when other treatment methods cannot be implemented for the patient.
When is extraction, or tooth removal, recommended?
Tooth removal is most often necessary in the case of wisdom teeth. Their extraction is indicated when an advanced carious process is taking place in the tooth. Wisdom teeth are difficult to keep properly clean because of their position.

For this reason, they are a common cause of gum inflammation and cyst formation. They are also removed when they cause crowding of the remaining teeth or erupt in the wrong direction. An indication for surgical extraction is the location of roots outside the alveolar process. Surgical tooth removal is also performed in some patients before orthodontic treatment, most often in cases of crowded teeth. Deciduous teeth may also require removal — apart from advanced decay, an indication for removal is difficult eruption of permanent teeth.
Surgical tooth removal — what does the procedure involve?
Tooth extraction is preceded by a consultation with a dental surgeon. The specialist orders the necessary diagnostics used to plan the treatment. Before the operation begins, the dental surgeon explains the entire procedure to the patient. Then anesthesia is administered. The key element of extraction is incising the gum and separating the tooth from the surrounding tissues. The tooth is then removed from the socket using dedicated instruments. Sutures are placed at the site of the removed tooth.
Does tooth extraction hurt?
Despite patients’ concerns, tooth removal procedures are painless. At Focus Clinic, we have three modern anesthesia systems: CALAJECT, QUICKSLEEPER, and PIEZOTOME® CUBE. Healing after tooth extraction is accelerated by the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a biocompatible material taken from the patient.
What are the recommendations after surgical tooth removal?
The wound after tooth extraction requires the patient to follow several basic recommendations. For about 2 hours after the procedure, you should not eat or drink. It is also recommended to avoid intensive brushing around the surgical area and rinsing the mouth.

What complications may occur after tooth extraction?
During surgical tooth removal, blood vessels or nerves may be damaged. After the procedure, the patient may develop dry socket or purulent inflammation of the socket, and persistent bleeding is also possible. Some people experience fever, swelling, and general malaise for several days after the procedure. The patient can relieve pain with painkillers. In the clinic in Mińsk Mazowiecki, we use only modern and proven treatment methods. Thanks to this, the healing process after tooth extraction is faster, and the risk of complications is minimized.
What are the contraindications to tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction by a dental surgeon cannot be performed in every patient. Contraindications to surgical tooth removal include:
- heart and vascular diseases, including cardiac arrhythmia, a previous myocardial infarction, or cardiac surgery,
- blood clotting disorders,
- leukemia,
- hyperthyroidism.
